Tomb Raider Vs. Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider Movie Review
By: Rachel

I saw the first Tomb Raider when it first came out in 2001, I was 8 or 9. My mom took me to see it in theatres, and I remember how excited I was. And after I saw it the obsession began; Lara Croft was basically my hero.

Even when I was young I knew where it was at, she was a smart and powerful woman who rocked a braid like no other.

While the Tomb Raider game may have had a different message, the films were very clear to me. The consensus was not positive for either original Tomb Raider films. But, both Tomb Raider films meant a lot to me, they showed me another example (I already had my mom, who is the most powerful woman out there) of the woman I wanted to be.

When I first saw the marketing material for the new Tomb Raider, it was a tough pill to swallow. There have been so many horrible re-makes, and I didn’t want to see that happen to the Angelina Jolie version of the film.

That being said, when I saw the casting and realized that Alicia Vikander would be playing Lara Croft I did feel a tiny bit better. She was brilliant in The Danish Girl, and I loved her in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., she has had multiple other successes as well.

Following this I learned that they weren’t fully remaking the series but restarting the story from a new angle. This also made me feel a tiny bit better. But, I won’t lie to you I was still as skeptical as ever. Which is saying something, because I’m not a skeptical person at all.

I don’t want to give any spoilers, because that’s just the worst. But, my mom and I went to see the new Tomb Raider and I was pleasantly surprised. If you’re like me and picture Lara Croft a certain way you may be a little frustrated at first. I was.

You have to keep in mind that this story line has changed a little. This version takes you farther than the original Tomb Raider and digs deeper into how Lara Croft became LARA CROFT. She will seem hesitant at first but that’s her first time on any type of “mission”. Once you realize that, you’ll enjoy the whole film more.

It’s worth seeing. If you feel how I feel about the original Tomb Raider films, don’t be scared they don’t ruin it like you think they will.
