Top 10 Movies from the 70s

Oh ya, we're bringing back the 70s! Style trends from decades past come back around all the time, and in the spirit of the 70s making a comeback, we thought we’d count down our 10 favourite movies from that decade! From classics to childhood favourites, the 70s brought some great movies to the table - can you dig it?

10) The Muppet Movie

It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights because it’s the MUPPET MOVIE! That’s right the 70s gave us many gifts but in 1979 it gave us the first Muppet Movie. This is the story of Kermit and his new-found Muppet friends on the road trip of their lives. Full of hilarious one liners, the epic quest to find stardom set the bar high not only for future Muppet movies but comedies in general. The Muppet Movie without a doubt deserves a spot on this list!

9) The Rescuers

Growing up in the 90s, we were raised on animated movies - so much Disney, but there were some other gems from other studios like this one! The 70s produced a lot of classic animated children’s movies, and the majority of them had animals as their main characters, and The Rescuers is no exception. This is one of my all-time favourites, and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with the two mice Bianca and Bernard as they go on a rescue mission to save a little girl in trouble!

8) The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The 70s were the decade for producing cult classics, and this has to be one of the best cult classics of all time! Ridiculous, hilarious, ground-breaking... I mean it’s a horror-musical where a young couple stumbles across a creepy mansion, complete with a transvestite scientist, his weird and wonderful entourage and a rock musical journey for the ages - so let’s do the time warp again!

7) The Aristocats

This movie is hands down one the best Disney movies, and not a lot of people realize that it was originally released in 1970. When a family of fancy felines are kidnapped, the most unlikely of characters tries to help get them home. This movie has romance, adventure, and truly excellent music. The Aristocats manages to create characters that we all fall in love with, and one of the most iconic characters, Marie. This little kitten with her pink bows may have been introduced in the 70s but she will never be forgotten. In the words of Marie, “Ladies do not start fights, but they can finish them,”

6) Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python is known for taking the familiar and turning it completely on its head, so it comes as no surprise that their take on a legend of King Arthur has become a comedy classic! Timeless from the get-go, you’ll laugh your ass off no matter which decade you watch it in - there’s a reason it’s been ranked in the top 10 greatest comedy films of all time! It is absolutely our perfect number 6!

5) Saturday Night Fever

The 70s brought us John Travolta at his most iconic - and that includes this movie! I mean, even if you haven’t seen this movie, you know the pose and that white suit. Disco music, rival gangs, a dance competition and the potential for falling in love all help to make this a classic that helped to define the 70s as a decade!

4) Jaws

DUN-UH DUN-UH DUN-UH! Two notes repeated found a way to scare the crap out of thousands of people in 1975 and they continue to freak us all out to this day. Well, the killer shark probably had something to do with it as well. Jaws is a classic! When a beach resort is thrown into complete chaos it becomes a wild “shark” chase (you saw what I did there) to stop the creature from terrorizing the teeny beach community. Our list would not be the same without the movie that changed cinematic

culture. Trust us, you’re going to need a bigger boat!

3) Halloween

You can not get more classic horror than Halloween! This movie completely changed the face of the genre. If you don’t know the story of the original Halloween Jamie Lee Curtis would be ashamed but I’ll tell you anyways. 15 years after Michael Myers killed his sister he escapes from a mental hospital. He returns to his hometown where it all began! Spooky, right? And while this movie seriously gives us the heebie-jeebies it’s the perfect number 3 for our list.

2) Grease

You know how much we love this movie babes, so there was no way we couldn’t include in on this list! It may be set in the 50s, it was released in 1978, cementing the 70s as John Travolta’s golden decade - I mean who doesn’t think of Danny Zuko when they think of John Travolta? It’s between that and the white suit! The 70s really liked their musicals, dance movies, and coming of age stories and this is the ultimate combination of the three!

1) Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

We are so excited to have this movie as our number one! Originally the movie was just titled Star Wars simply because it was the very first one. But it was soon renamed A New Hope. Who would have thought that a movie released in 1977 would not only still be huge but push forward one of the most successful stories and films in history? Well, honestly George Lucas probably saw this coming and I’m sure so did C-3PO he seems pretty dialed in. This is the first time these characters are introduced on screen and we are here for it. Basically, what we’re saying is that Han Solo and Chewie flew the Millennium Falcon and everything that comes with it right into our hearts!
