Do You Want to Run Away to Join the Academy?
The Umbrella Academy Show Review
Now, considering that I’m a bit of a comic book nerd and a crazy super hero fan I’m a little ashamed that it took me so long to watch this show. It actually took a fair amount of prompting, and I’m not sure why. BUT, once I started this series I couldn’t stop.
The Umbrella Academy is one of the newest additions to the Netflix family. It was a 10-episode series that was released in February 2019. When a bunch of babies are born on the same exact date unexpectedly an eccentric billionaire travels the globe to adopt as many as possible. He manages to adopt 7 in total. Knowing that there was a good chance that his kids had special “gifts” he creates The Umbrella Academy. A group of kids trained to save the world no matter how big or how small the cause.
The show is set in present date and The Umbrella Academy aren’t children anymore. They are brought back together when tragedy hits, and once they are back together it’s blatantly clear a lot has changed!
This story is weird, but good weird! The kind of weird that keeps you interested. Every episode found a new way to keep you eager to see the next episode. One of my pet peeves with shows is when you get episodes that add absolutely nothing to the story. I have a short attention span as it is, if my brain gets the opportunity it will wander away on a tangent. I’m thrilled to say that I did not have this problem with this show. Every episode pushed you forward and helped you piece together what was going on.
I can only imagine how difficult it would be to pull off good acting with a peculiar plot like this one. But, this cast succeeds in the best way possible. You’ll see some familiar faces such as Ellen Page and some unfamiliar faces like Aidan Gallagher. They have the sibling ins and outs completely down. The tension that can only be caused by family drama feels real, which makes even the craziest of stories believable.
I want to save you sometime, because while you’re watching the first episode, I can almost guarantee that if you are a Game of Thrones fan that you will be staring at one of the characters named Luther the entire time. The actor’s name is Tom Hopper and he plays Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones. Now that you know you won’t need to re-watch most of the first episode because you spent the entire time concentrating on the “I know I know him” factor the first time you watch it
I don’t want to spoil anything for you so don’t be scared to keep reading! The show has a rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience rating of 85%. I honestly, think this is low scored. That being said though The Umbrella Academy is one of those love it or hate it shows. There is really no in between. Which I honestly think is something these dysfunctional heroes would appreciate.
This story isn’t just creative so is the filming. You can totally tell that this was originally a comic book. From the action scenes to always finding a way to include an umbrella in the opening credits each episode has a cinematic quality that gives this show an edge.
There are twists and turns, and you will get a few good AH HA moments for sure. And I’m just going to say that they’re lucky they renewed this and there is going to be a season two because if I didn’t get some of my questions answered I was going to flip a table. Not that I’m overly invested or anything!
I laughed, I cried, I got confused, I got more confused, I figured some shit out, and I got real into the story. It’s a well-rounded show and it brought a lot to this already super hero filled table.
This is 100% BABC approved, happy watching babes!
