Top 15 Unforgettable Love Stories

Well, with Valentines Day this month we have love stories on the brain. Not all loves stories make you cry, sometimes they make you laugh but sometimes they throw all your emotions together and see what happens. These aren’t our favourite rom coms or our favourite chick flicks. These love stories have stuck with us for one reason or another, and we think they deserve their own list!

Here are our Top 15 Unforgettable Love Stories –

(15) Notting Hill

“I’m just a babe, standing in front of some bombshells asking them to love this movie” - or something like that! Iconic line aside, this movie’s unforgettable love story comes when awkward British bookstore owner meets international movie star: not something you’d think would work out right? Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts will make you believe in this unlikely, and yes, unforgettable romance! This is the perfect curl-up on a gloomy February day movie: snuggle up and get ready to smile!

(14) Walk to Remember

I swear this movie didn’t just make the list because the main song in the film’s first line is “I’ll always remember”. But it does help. A lot of people when they think Mandy Moore the first thing that comes to mind is this movie. While A Walk to Remember does have a classic story of opposites attract, this movie isn’t sighed at every time the title is mentioned because it’s a typical story. And while we agree that it’s a distinctive 2000s movie, this story will make you think about what love can really do no matter how young you are. If you’re in the mood for a love conquers all story, then this is 100% the one for you. Love is patient babes.

(13) Pretty Woman

Now, I understand this movie has made our lists before, but it’s a feisty prostitute and an emotionally dumb business man who fall in love. You’re not going to forget that anytime soon and we both know it. This love story starts as a “business” deal, but when you peel back the layers these two people were meant for each other. This movie gives hope that no matter how different you are it doesn’t mean you can’t have a love story that will have other love stories designed after it (#goals). The romance that Vivian (Julia Roberts) and Edward (Richard Gere) is the underdog of romances, and really who doesn’t love an underdog story?

(12) Me Before You

Remember when we were talking about those love stories that like to take your emotions and basically stir shit up? Ya? Well, Me Before You is that story. I’m just going to throw it out there if you’re a movie crier do not watch this in a public place, like not on a plane or work (I’m not naming any names…) This movie is a lot of things, a love story, a be yourself story, a tough choices story etc. It will hit you in the feels, and your feels will be bruised for quite awhile, but it’s totally worth it which is why this film is so unforgettable. This story does have a bit of a leg up because it was a book first but either way Me Before You is our perfect number 12 on our list.

(11) Say Anything

This love story is so unforgettable that you know it even if you’ve never seen the movie: that iconic image of John Cusack standing in the rain with the boom box over his head? Yup, that’s this movie. If that doesn’t fit the criteria of unforgettable, I don’t know what is and I don’t think you could say anything to convince us otherwise! (See what I did there?)

(10) The Notebook

You didn’t think we weren’t going to include this on our list, did you? I know we don’t tend to go super traditional with these but I mean, it’s The Notebook! If you’re a bird, I’m a bird; laying in the road; that kiss in the rain... I mean we could go on and on. Basically, this is a classic and if you haven’t seen it you need to correct that, pronto. And remember to keep the tissues handy!

(9) The Princess and the Frog

We know this is Disney animation but hear us out: what are the most unforgettable love stories? Fairy tales! Particularly the ones Disney made into animated films that seriously impacted our childhoods. Now Princess and the Frog came out when we were older, but this movie is all the more unforgettable because of the way it turns a classic tale on its head! I mean Tiana kisses the transformed prince and SHE turns into a frog too - bet she didn’t see that coming! Besides the romance where Tiana and Naveen learn valuable life lessons from each other, Tiana is the Disney Princess we need: she’s a hard working badass who isn’t going to rely on any wishes on stars to get where she wants to be! None of this waiting around for the one stuff either - making this all the more deserving of a spot on this list!

(8) The Great Gatsby

This fantasy of a story first made its entrance into the world in 1925. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book has one of the most talked about love stories ever told, and that translated all the way to 2013 when The Great Gatsby the film was released. This movie got the soundtrack this classic book always deserved and trust we couldn’t be happier about that. Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Daisy (Carey Mulligan) connection was undeniable and the entanglement of their epic story is something that we won’t just read forever but watch forever. This film is stunning, and honestly, it’s the first time we didn’t think Tobey Maguire was creepy and we think that alone deserves some praise. In fact, Tobey Maguire was the perfect Nick Carraway. This film helped make sure that this story will continue to be unforgettable for many more years to come.

(7) About Time

Okay, in a strange case of typecasting, when we were going through making this list we realized Rachel McAdams is in THREE time travel movies, in none of which she gets to time travel. We call bullshit! But putting that aside, this movie definitely qualifies as an unforgettable love story: a genetic ability to go back in time leads Tim to have infinite chances to win the girl of his dreams - and trust us, he needs them! This love story is sweet, and awkward and ultimately shows us how important it is take the moments we’re given because unlimited chances aren’t the blessing you might think.

(6) Love, Simon

If you haven’t watched this movie, you need to finish reading this post (of course) and then proceed to drop everything and watch this. Like some of the other stories on our list this was a book first. This story is one that our world needed, it isn’t just the romantic love story that means so much but it’s all the different types of love that needed to be told. This story is kind of like a long distance-Romeo and Juliet-coming of age story. But you know with less death and instead of letters there are emails! The acting is phenomenal, especially Nick Robinson who plays Simon. Simon has fallen in love with Blue a boy he meets online, and while he struggles with all the loves in his life, you’ll be rooting for him every step of the way.

(5) 10 Things I Hate About You

Oh where to begin with this one: early 2000s Shakespeare/classics adaptations were THE movie trend (seriously I can think of at least four off the top of my head) and I think this one wins for most unforgettable love story! Technically there are three love stories going on, but only one results in the poem the movie takes its name from! There are a million quotable moments in this movie, and there's something about this movie that elevates it to teen classic, and enters it into the unforgettable love story category - Patrick (baby Heath Ledger) and Kat (Julia Stiles) are perfectly imperfect for each other, and watching them fight their way to realizing that will make you laugh, cringe, cry... plus the singing on the bleachers scene is one of our all time favourites!

(4) Dirty Dancing

NOBODY puts baby in the corner, but we sure as hell made Dirty Dancing our number 4. This movie didn’t just give us an unforgettable story, but some of the most iconic lines and dances. People have been trying to get their significant other to hold them up in the middle of a lake since this came out in 1987. This story has everything you could want in a love story and more, even if you have your dance space and we have our dance space make sure that you don’t forget to include this movie in your life!

(3) The Big Sick

What is more unforgettable than a real-life love story? This movie tells the true story of how actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon (I know, spoiler alert!) met, fell in love and lived happily ever after... If only it was that simple! A lot happens between falling in love and living happily ever, and when Emily gets sick, things get even more complicated. Even if this wasn't a true story, it would be unforgettable! Watching two people navigate a complicated and at times heart breaking situation with humour and (for the most part) strength, will touch your heart, make you hopeful and leave you thinking about this love story long after the credits have rolled!

(2) A Star is Born

I mean, this love story is so unforgettable that this is the fourth remake in as many decades - the most recent one with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga having been nominated and won countless awards as it's a brilliant performance from everyone involved! But what makes this movie is the love story itself: Ally is an aspiring singer who is discovered one night by superstar Jackson Maine, and that moment launches the rest of her life; love, stardom and all her dreams coming true. It sounds like a cliché, but there is a power and rawness to this love story that sticks with you and gets into your soul! Truly unforgettable, and why it made it to the top of our list.

(1) The Bodyguard

We’re just going to say this once because we have to, but we will ALWAYS LOVE THIS MOVIE. Okay, we got that out of the way. This story is the one that gets us every time. This movie was released in 1992 and has remained timeless ever since. And can we just say Whitney Houston, hello!? But, beyond her queen power her connection with Kevin Costner is what drives this story home. This is a hard love story to portray, and without giving to much away just in case you haven’t seen this. This is the classic case of loving or wanting what you can’t or shouldn’t have. There is no story or movie that we would rather at our number one.
