If Cupid Could Read

Babes, it's time for a special Valentine's Day edition of Megan's Library - namely some of my favourite romance novels! There were so many to choose from that it was hard to narrow it down and I know I'm missing some strong contenders - so keep an eye out as some of the ones that didn't make the cut this time around may pop up in later editions of Megan's Library.

I've said this before: I will basically read everything and anything, and that includes romance of all genres and levels of sappiness. If you know me, you know I don't tend to be a particularly sappy person, but I'm not going to lie sometimes you're just in the mood for something that makes you smile and believe in the power of love!

I went through my shelves and pulled some of my favourites, so no matter what type of romance you're in the mood for, I got you babe!

Pride and Prejudice

By: Jane Austen

This is a classic - and rightly so! This has been one of my all-time favourite books since I was thirteen, when I discovered the world of Elizabeth and Darcy, I honestly have never looked back! Austen writes a sharp, insightful love story; at times scathing of the characters and the world they live in, but also with an understanding that makes them all the more believable as characters.

Elizabeth and Darcy are both flawed in their own ways, Elizabeth is quick to form opinions of people, and Darcy is reluctant to give up his pride; they despise each other on sight! Or do they? No matter how many times I read this book, I love following along for the ride as they learn about themselves, and how sometimes falling in love doesn't look like what you imagine. But that doesn't make it any less powerful. Two hundred years after it was written, this book still has so much to teach us about ourselves and the world we live in - though on the surface it may look very different than the world Austen was writing in!

Vision in White

By: Nora Roberts

The undisputed queen of romance of our time would have to be Nora Roberts - and what makes her so successful is her ability to build characters and a world that's both believable and resonates with her readers, no matter how far fetched the circumstances! Vision in White is book one of the Bride Quartet, where four childhood friends have gone into business together putting together unforgettable weddings.

This first installment introduces all the characters, but focuses on Mackenzie, the photographer of the group, who has her guard up so high it takes a while for her to realize an absent-minded professor might just have snuck under it... These books never fail to make me smile, and believe in the power of friendship and love! A quick, easy and enjoyable read, with just enough reality to keep it interesting.

The Boy is Back

By: Meg Cabot

I love Meg Cabot books - ever since Princess Diaries days! This is the latest installment in her adult series "Boy", and it doesn't disappoint! The way she writes this series is just so fun: it's all told as emails, texts, journal entries, transcribed voicemails etc. so you're experiencing it as if you were a fly on the wall of the characters technologies. This latest installment is the first to have text conversations as one of the ways the story is told, the original books were written when the quickest written conversations still happened through email.

Meg Cabot writes bold, funny characters that feel like friends of yours, and Reed and Becky, the main characters of this story are no exception: high school sweethearts who haven't spoken in a decade are suddenly thrown back together, dealing with a crisis in Reed's family, and along the way they find that maybe those feelings never quite went away... If you're looking for something a bit different than your typical modern romance, and in the mood to laugh, I would definitely recommend this and all the other books in the series!

My Lady's Choosing

By: Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris

I discovered this book on the shelf at Chapters recently and was instantly intrigued: it's a choose-your-own-adventure ROMANCE NOVEL! How fun is that?! As they put it, you are you, just the Regency-era penniless orphan version of you trying to navigate London society, and you encounter a number of people along the way that offer different opportunities and paths to choose from.

There's the Mr. Darcy-esque brooding nobleman, the rugged Scottish Highlander with a heart of gold, the dark and dangerous lord... not to mention your best friend, initial employer and about a million other characters in between! I've now gone through it three times and each time have ended up somewhere completely different, and I've enjoyed every minute of it! Definitely not something to pick up if you want a fully fleshed out plot line, but if you're in the mood for something completely out of the ordinary, this is the romance novel for you!

Outlander

By Diana Galbadon

Long before there was the hit tv series, there was this book. If I were to put this in a category it would be a cross between historical romance and fantasy - there are two different historical periods, and y'know time travel. This book is beautifully written, and you can't help but root for the characters as they make their way through a dangerous and confusing time. Tough enough being born in the Scottish Highlands during the days before the Jacobite Rebellion, but being a woman thrown back in time from post-World War II? Yikes!

The thing that pulls this story forward and has created the loyal following for both the books and the show is the love story between Claire and Jamie: the strength of their love comes through in every encounter and you'll be rooting for them as they navigate some incredibly difficult situations, all while Claire is trying to get back to her own time. If you haven't immersed yourself in this series yet, I highly recommend it, and the first book in particular: it's one I come back to time and time again!

Happy romance reading babes!
