Top 10 Women Led Comedies
The ladies of comedy have made their presence known, and we literally could not be more thrilled. I think we all know that when it comes to comedy it’s been a struggle for females to get the lead. In celebration of the fact that the women of comedy are boldly leading the way now more than ever, we’ve brought together our Top 10 Women Led Comedies!
10. Snatched
No surprise that Amy Schumer would be making an entrance on our list. In this side-splitting mother daughter comedy, Emily’s (Amy Schumer) boyfriend dumps her the night before they are meant to leave on a romantic getaway. Hilariously, she asked her neurotic and super cautious mother (Goldie Hawn) to join her instead. This movie takes an adventurous turn when both women are kidnapped during their to good to be true vacation. This movie takes a comedic look into the relationship between a mother and daughter who may love each other but not like each other very much. When it comes to comedy there is no age limit and Snatched is here to prove that to you.
9. Ghostbusters
This was the beginning of the all-female remake comedy trend - and it sparked it for a reason! Flipping the classic male-led comedy on its head, with four women making up the ghost busting team and Chris Hemsworth as their bimbo-esque receptionist... oh it’s just so good! It brings together some of the biggest female comedic powerhouses: Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and with these women there was no way this wasn’t going to be hilarious! They took a classic, turned it on its head and managed to make their own comedy gold - genius!
8. Baby Mama
This movie includes one of the most iconic duos in comedy, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They write, they act they do it all. Baby Mama is a PRIME example of their comedic brilliance. When Kate (Tina Fey) decides that it’s time to have a baby single or not she hires your not so average surrogate, Angie (Amy Poehler). When the two of them are forced to live together they have to try not to kill each other which is funny as crap to watch. No one else could play these roles, and we want to thank Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for their comedic gold!
7. Sisters
Listen, there is just magic when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler get together, and they’re responsible for some of the funniest comedies out there, with flawed and hilarious women as the main characters - from SNL skits to blockbuster movies, and Sisters is no exception! They play sisters (duh) who go back to their family home to clean it out and have one last hurrah by throwing one of their epic high school-era parties... which inevitably goes sideways! This movie never fails to crack us up and hit us right in the feels all at the same time, so it needed to be on this list!
6. Bridesmaids
Oh Bridesmaids - the female SNL alumni strike again! Kristin Wiig co-wrote this hysterical, R-rated film about female friendship, and brings together Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey as the mismatched bridal party of Maya Rudolph’s bride, and inevitably chaos ensues - complete with diarrhea, getting kicked off a plane and tears - but also lots of finding the funny in our flaws, bonding and the power of friendship! It earned its spot on this list!
5. Pitch Perfect
Oh this female-led comedy is aca-awesome! Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are comedy gold in this movie, along with the rest of the Barden Bellas - we don’t know what it is about bodily functions and hilarity, but if you haven’t seen this movie just be prepared to laugh your ass off at projectile vomiting! Besides that, this movie is full of laughs, awesome singing and perfect awkwardness, plus Rebel Wilson is just perfection as Fat Amy. The boys in the movie are funny, but they pale in comparison to the women, so there was no way they wouldn’t be included in this list!
4. Trainwreck
Well, hello Amy! She’s joining us again, but this time as a version of herself. The screenplay for this film was actually written by Amy Schumer and it’s based off her life. Amy continues to break female stereo types when she plays a funny, commitment phobic, writer. While there are comedic men throughout the movie, mainly Bill Hader, the women are the ones who really bring it including Tilda Swinton and Vanessa Bayer. When Amy meets a good guy her world isn’t really prepared for it, and watching her comedic-ly try and get her shit together makes this movie one that will make you laugh out loud. You may also ugly cry, don’t worry babes we’ve all been there. Trainwreck is the perfect number 4 for our list.
3. Mean Girls
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler strike again! Technically we think this is the first movie they starred in together, so it’s appropriate that it’s one that Tina Fey wrote and that has become one of the most iconic films of the early 2000s! This movie is packed full of hilarious moments, all centered on the flawed cast of female characters - both teenage and adult! Amy Poehler is a standout as Regina George’s “fun mom”, and all of the Plastics... and Janice... and the list goes on! This is one of our all-time favourites, and for good reason!
2. Bring it On
Let’s bring out the jazz fingers babes and soak up the cheesy goodness that is Bring it On. A comedy from 2000 has some of the most memorable and quotable female comedy moments. Gabrielle Union, Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Lindsay Sloane and all the leading ladies found a way to make the cheerleading world hilarious. When the Toro cheerleading squad realize that all their winning routines were actually stolen from the Clovers it’s starts a feud like no other, and not just because we’re not sure how often cheerleading feuds happen. The cast chemistry is what makes this movie as funny as it is, a “cheer-ocracy” has never looked so good. The comical women of this movie push Bring it On to our number 2 spot.
1. Girls Trip
What do you get when you take four bad ass women, who are completely hilarious and put them into an incredibly well written comedy? Well you get Girls Trip, and honey we couldn’t be happier that this is our number one pick! Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and Jada Pinkett Smith separately are forces to be reckon with, but together they’re even funnier and even better. This is a story about four women trying to rekindle their friendship when their worlds have taken them so far apart. These women are able to bring some tough topics to the surface without loosing their funny bone and we could laugh with this movie over and over again. If you haven’t seen this movie, you honestly need this in your life.
