Found on: Pinterest, Marie Claire
Though I don’t usually wear much makeup, I do get a kick out of trying out new makeup looks for fun – usually ones that I’ve found on Pinterest. In this case, I’d stumbled on this eye makeup tutorial a little while ago, so the other day I decided to give it a shot! This tutorial was put together by Marie Claire magazine, and was inspired by Brigitte Bardot, the French film star and her iconic “bedroom eyes” - and who doesn’t want that look from time to time?
Handily, the only thing I was missing to complete the look was a brown eyeliner since mine is forever going walkabout, but it was easy enough to run into Shoppers and pick one up on my way home. All you need for this look is two shades of matte eye shadows in light and dark brown (usually any neutral eye palette will have these), a medium brown eyeliner, brightening eye pencil and black mascara – I used the shades Fawn and Sable from my Covergirl NoticeMe Nudes palette for the eye shadow, NYC CityProof 24HR Waterproof eyeliner in Mink, NYX Wonder Pencil in Fair and Maybelline The Rocket mascara in Blackest Black; all are drugstore finds, and between $3.99 - $12.99, so they’re easy to find and won’t break the bank!
I found that this tutorial was easy enough to follow from the pictures, but if you prefer to read instructions, or have a combination of the two, Marie Claire does a good job of breaking down the steps! Don’t get me wrong, there aren’t many – this is definitely on the simpler side of beauty tutorials, which is a bonus since I maybe might get impatient when it starts getting complicated… Oops! So, if you’re a makeup beginner or don’t have a lot of patience, don’t despair! You can do this!
To start off, do your usual foundation and brow routine. From the photo, err on the side of softer brows, but you do you!
EXPECTATION:
REALITY:
Step one: I used Fawn over my entire eyelid and crease and winged it out into a thick wing as a base for the rest of the look.
Step two: I took the Mink eyeliner and lined my upper lid, filling in the line til it covered half my eyelid, and then winged it out following the wing created by the eyeshadow, but not covering it completely.
Step three: I lined my lower lid with the Mink eyeliner, connecting the line with the wing and the inner corner of my eye.
Step four: Using the Sable eyeshadow, I went over the Mink eyeliner, smoothing out the lines.
Step five: Finally, I used my WonderPencil on my lower waterline to help brighten my eyes, and tada! That’s all it takes to get a pretty epic statement eye makeup look.
Did it turn out like the picture? You babes are the true judges! I think it came close, not exactly like the picture but overall, I think it turned out pretty well! It’s definitely more makeup than I usually wear, but still a look I might attempt for an occasion that calls for a dramatic eye!
If I were to do it again, I’d make sure my eyeliner is sharpened to a super thin point to give a bit more control and probably take the thickness of the lines down a notch: because of my eye shape, I found that following the instructions exactly ended up with it looking even more intense than the tutorial photos suggested and maybe a tad more on the raccoon eyes side of things than I was going for! Another slight downside, this is not a look that I would rock with my glasses – or at least the pair of glasses I had on that day! There was just so much going on, so this will be a contacts-only look for me.
What do you think babes? Is this a look that you would rock?
Happy beautifying babes!
