Top 10 Movies Where the Animals are the Real Stars

As animal lovers one of our favorite things is a movie with a strong animal character, what’s even better than that you ask? A movie that makes you forget that there are human stars because the animals are just so fantastic. If you agree, then this list is the perfect one for you -

(10) Madagascar

This movie really makes you think about the balance of power in the zoo – much like in the jungle, the lion is on top here too! Plus, the humans have made him a celebrity, so I don’t think there’s any question that the animals are the true stars of this movie! This movie is all about the power of friendship, getting back to your roots and how what you wish for isn’t always what you expect, plus you’ve got a celebrity lion, a wise-cracking giraffe, a hypochondriac giraffe and a sassy hippo, mastermind penguins, a monarchy of lemurs… and that’s only the tip of a very entertaining iceberg!

(9) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

This movie is set during World War II, which we can all admit going into that during this time period humans were already making a real mess of it. While this story is about Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter and their first adventure to Narnia the real star is 100% Aslan. The strong, brave and magical lion that is at the root of this story. This movie is about courage, friendship, love and so much more. What Aslan is able to bring out of all the characters is astounding and empowers you just by watching. This bold lion catapults this movie onto our list.

(8) How to Train Your Dragon

Okay, no question Toothless is the star of this movie. I mean without him, there wouldn’t even BE a movie since Hiccup wouldn’t have a dragon to train! This movie will melt your heart, make you laugh and make you wish desperately for a dragon of your own – sit back, relax and watch Toothless challenge all the assumptions people have ever had about dragons; to quote Hagrid from Harry Potter: “deeply misunderstood creatures, dragons,” and this movie goes to show just how true that is!

(7) Ratatouille

We all have dreams, but what happens when your dream is literally bigger than you are? Plus if you’re a rat and your dream is to be a chef of human food… Well there are going be a couple of obstacles in your way – but Remy’s not your average rat! He has heart, determination and the palate to match! He finds a way to live his dream and turn the life of a lowly human dishwasher in the restaurant around, making his the undisputed star of this movie!

(6) Jurassic Park

What do you get when you send a couple of paleontologists and a mathematician to tour a billionaire’s pre-historic theme park that maybe isn’t as safe as it’s supposed to be? Well, you get Steven Spielberg's massive hit. While the acting was great, and the writing was phenomenal the real break out stars were the dinosaurs. For the early 90s, the affects were ground breaking and to do this day the dinosaurs are still freaking us out! The dinosaurs moved this story forward with the realistic heart stopping performance. They waltzed into our nightmares in the best way possible.

(5) Winnie the Pooh

Listen, if you don’t think these loveable characters are real animals we’re going to have a real problem! When Eeyore the wonderfully gloomy donkey loses his tail the rest of the animals in the Hundred Acre Wood band together to try and find him a replacement. While these endearing stories wouldn’t be the same without Christopher Robin, we truly couldn’t live without Pooh, Piglet Tiger, Owl, or Rabbit. Each character was able to teach us a lesson in the most magical way. If we could learn all our tough life lessons from these charming animals, we’re pretty sure we’d take them better.

(4) Lilo & Stich

When Lilo, a young girl living in Hawaii adopts a “unique” looking dog she gets a little more than she bargained for. While Stitch isn’t your traditional dog, since he’s well an alien he takes this movie and makes it a real classic. This movie is the epitome of heart warming, and the bond that Stitch makes with Lilo shows everyone that family doesn’t have to be a stereotypical image. While we adore Lilo, Stitch’s perseverance and love is what hits us right in the feels. Lilo and Stitch teach us that “Ohana means family, and family means that nobody gets left behind” We would never leave Stitch off our list!

(3) Zootopia

Who needs humans? Definitely not the world of Zootopia, where there are no humans to be found! The stars of this movie are a bunny and a fox: an unlikely duo of predator and prey, cop and con, optimism and cynicism – but it works, and works so well! Honestly you can watch this movie the whole way through without even realizing there aren’t any human characters, and that for us is the true test of whether a movie deserves a spot on our list!

(2) Finding Nemo

We literally could not have this list without Finding Nemo on it – I mean, let’s be real, while there are humans in this movie, they’re either incompetent or the villain (I’m looking at you, Darla!) and if you managed to get through this movie without falling in love with Marlon, Dory and Nemo, well I don’t know if we can be friends. And besides them, this movie has sharks in the shark version of AA, surfing sea turtles with a buddy system, a singing manta ray school teacher… I mean c’mon! There’s no question as to why this is the runner-up to our top spot. Shark bait ooh ah ha!

(1)The Lion King

This movie is proof that you don’t need humans to have a long-time family feud or a royal scandal. The Lion King is one of Disney’s most iconic movies, ever! This movie has everything you could want, amazing songs, relatable and wonderful characters, and a really good story. While we follow Simba through his quest to get his father’s kingdom back you can’t help but fall in love with these good guy animals. You basically forget that there are no humans anywhere to be found. The Lion King even delivers one of the most fearsome villains ever. This movie completely earned the number one spot on our list.
