Top 13 Road Trip Movies
When we think cottage, we think road trip. Feel like getting away but can't? Well then these top 13 road trip movies are perfect for you.
(13) We’re the Millers
How does a stripper, teen runaway, an adorable geek and a pot dealer end up on a “family” road trip in Mexico? That’s a good question and We’re the Millers has the answers. This comedy puts a whole new spin on what a road trip is and could be. If you haven’t seen this movie, you absolutely should it will make you chuckle and cringe all at the same time. This movie has us wondering how Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis kept a straight face while filming.
(12) Due Date
What does a movie with Zach Galifianakis, Robert Downey Jr. and an adorable French bulldog get you? Comedic brilliance, that’s what. Due Date is about man’s quest to make it home to his wife before she gives birth to their first child. Unfortunately, this is a comedy so that plan doesn’t go well… as planned. In the end the two men must embark on a road trip to get Robert Downey Jr.’s character home. This will make you laugh, we can guarantee you that. Due Date has fairly earned its spot on our list.
(11) Road Trip
Well if the title of the film wasn’t reason enough to put this film on our list the hard-core bromance is. When a guy’s “antics” more like ass-tics are videotaped and some how accidentally mailed to his girlfriend; him and his friends make the long road trip to try and stop it from getting to her. While a race against the mail doesn’t sound thrilling trust me this movie’s goofy humor will get your eyes leaking.
(10) Almost Famous
What teenager hasn’t dreamed of going on a road with a rocknroll band? Well, 15 year old William lives the dream when he gets the chance of a lifetime to interview an up-and-coming band - and ends up tagging along on the road when the
band puts off his interview. Funny, engaging and filled with eye-opening lessons (as every true road trip should!), Almost Famous is all about navigating a world you idealized and what happens when reality sets in.
(9) Stand by Me
When four boys hear about a kid their age that has gone missing, they decide to go on an adventure to see what they can find. Even though this doesn’t take place in a car this is 100% a road trip. Along the way, they learn more about each other and themselves, in a funny, heart-warming and life-changing adventure that never fails to make us cry! But good cry, promise.
(8) Plans, Trains & Automobiles
A control freak, an annoying stranger and an unplanned road trip trying to make it home for Thanksgiving - what could go wrong? This movie has Steve Martin and John Candy at their best - it’s the ultimate cross-country road trip since as the title suggests, they end up using pretty much every possible transportation possible, except a boat, which makes sense since the area is land-locked... but I’m sure if Steve Martin’s character thought it would get him home faster, he’d have tried it! Seriously funny, heartfelt and featuring one of the most epic swearing sequences ever, Planes, Trains & Automobiles will make you laugh and believe in the power of the road trip.
(7) Thelma & Louise
Ah the classic female buddy movie! Is there anything more iconic, or badass, than these two? We couldn’t have a list of our top road trip movies without including the adventures of these badass babes! What starts as a simple road trip cross-country, turns into an epic police car chase as Thelma and Louise show us the power of the original and ultimate ride or die friendship. Plus, young Brad Pitt, enough said!
(6) Are We There Yet?
Probably the most dreaded road trip question of all time, but man, does it make a hilarious movie! I mean, c’mon: Ice Cube trying to impress a woman by taking her kids to visit her in Canada? He definitely gets more than he bargained for when they end up having to drive to Canada... in his prized car. Get ready to cringe, laugh and dread the next time you’re on a road trip with kids because I guarantee you’re going to be asked “are we there yet?”! This movie has definitely earned it’s spot on our list - even just on the title alone!
(5) The Muppet Movie
Not to be confused this is The Muppet Movie from 1979. When Kermit the frog makes the important decision to become a movie star he must pack up his things and tiny suitcase and make the trip across the county to California. Now this road trip has Miss Piggy, so it already has a fuzzy pink leg up in the road trip race. Along the way Kermit meets most of his friends that we’ve come to love and know. Fozzie Bear and Gonzo included. This road trip is the start of something great and it has the Muppets that we adore learning some hard lessons. If you haven’t seen this classic we highly recommend it. The Muppet Movie rightfully earns our number 5 spot.
(4) Zombieland
Well, the world has basically ended so now is definitely the prime time for a road trip. Right? Well when it comes to Zombieland we couldn’t agree more. When a deadly virus breaks out across the world not many people survived, this film brings together four of the most unlikely people for an unexpected road trip to a hopefully “safe” zone. This movie has everything, it’s funny, there’s some romance, a little action, a wee bit gory AND a road trip. What more could you ask for? Really, don’t be greedy and see this movie! The actor’s chemistry is unmatched, and the talent is high, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Benson (she has a knack for road trip movies apparently) we could go on and on. This film brings a welcome twist to the traditional road trip.
(3) Little Miss Sunshine
I’m sure you’re wondering what the Little Miss Sunshine Children’s Beauty Contest has to do with a road trip. But, this film has the answer for you. It has everything to do with it. When the Hoover family sets out to get the youngest of the family (Abigail Breslin) to the Little Miss Sunshine Contest in order to fulfill her dream of winning it catapults the funny but dysfunctional family into a road trip they probably weren’t ready for. This film’s cast is stacked, Toni Collette and Steve Carell in all their delightful glory. This film is a prime example of what a road trip or honestly adventure can do for a relationship whether it be family or otherwise. Little Miss Sunshine hard core earned a spot on our list.
(2) Crossroads
I’m pretty sure that we here at BABC could figure out how to get this movie onto our list no matter what but in this case Crossroads is a fantastic road trip movie. What brings together three childhood friends who have lost touch better than a cross country road trip? Nothing. Obviously. This road trip is about following your dreams and genuinely loving the people around you for who they are. All of this is orchestrated from the inside of one bad ass convertible. If you’re in the mood for an uplifting adventure? This is the film for you.
(1) Wizard of Oz
Now, if you think about it, this is literally the original road trip. While the road is rather direct, and brightly colored it SO counts. Many pits stops are made, they’ve obviously forgotten to pack the essentia
ls (typical road trip behaviour) and a group of friends is making the journey. The Wizard of Oz is a classic film, that should be seen by all. It’s magical and charming and will leave you with a smile at the end. When Dorothy finds herself far away from home, she must set out with her unusual group of confidants to find her way back. They learn a hard road trip lesson, that even though the adventure is fun there really is “no place like home”.
