DON'T JUDGE A BEER
BY IT'S LABEL

By: Rachel

I happen to be the one and only beer drinker among the BABC ladies. Some of the ladies will have a beer now and then but I’m usually riding solo.

I’m not a picky eater or drinker and like most beers. This allows me the luxury to wander down the aisles of LCBO or Beer Store and pick out new things to try. I actually read the little stories on labels or pick up the beer with the fantastic label.

I’ve had my luck with my little game, but I’ve also made some poor decisions. Now, I’ve decided to let you in on the game so maybe you won’t make the same mistakes I have.

Quick Facts –

Beer: Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc

Bottle or Can: Bottle (you can purchase this in a can, but I haven’t tried this)
Made In: France
Alcohol Percentage: 5%
Type of Beer: Wheat Ale
Taste Style: Light & Fruity

Does the Label Match the Taste: No

Honestly, when I first saw someone drinking this I made fun of them. Like serious shit talking. The bottle was so dainty sitting next to whatever beer I was drinking that night. I hated the label, it was small and boring. But, the blue bottle was intriguing.

I’m always up to try something new, and it’s exhausting be right all the time so one night at the cottage I thought I’d give it chance.

As soon as I tried it I immediately felt like a jerk. This beer was delicious.

It’s described as light and fruity. And it’s exactly that. Everyone that I’ve talked to always says it tastes like something different, but I taste grapefruit. It is bubblier then most beers that I’m used to, but it’s still great to drink.

It’s the type of beer that you could give to someone who claims they aren’t a beer drinker, but they would still enjoy it. If you’re wondering the best time to drink this, it would be very cold and it’s towards the summery side of drinks. But, I do drink it all year round now.

I’m so happy I ignored my feelings about this label and drank it anyways.

Quick Facts –

Beer: Collingwood Rockwell Pilsner

Bottle or Can: Can
Made In: Canada
Alcohol Percentage: 4.6%
Type of Beer: Pilsner
Taste Style: Medium & Malty

Does the Label Match the Taste: No

I’ve actually tried two other beers from Collingwood, and I really did like them. But, the green label and can always seemed the prettiest to me out of all them. I’ve always liked pilsners and most beers that I drink are around the medium level, so this beer had everything going for it.

As soon as I took my first sip of this I regretted it. Now, this may just be me, but this tasted like burnt caramel. This was a huge let down, I really liked the Kingpost ESB and 3-Point Saison but this was not up to their standards.

It felt like their pilsner was the youngest sibling that really wanted to play with it’s older siblings but isn’t “big” enough yet.

This won’t deter me from purchasing other products from Collingwood going forward, but the label 100% oversold the taste on this one.
